The Dust Bowl storms in Oklahoma in the 30s and occuring again today are much like what the Chinese call "shachenbao" , storms of dust and sand covering thousands of miles and even over the ocean. "Clouds of brown hung low to the ground, like the tendrils of a living thing that crept into the valley" - Peter Hessler, Oracle Bones. These storms have a strange, devastating, terrifiying beauty.
